PYRETHRUM FARMING IN NYABIHU AND RUBAVU DISTRICTS GENERATES OVER RWF2.4 BILLION

On September 30, 2026, leaders and stakeholders in pyrethrum farming attended Horizon SOPYRWA Ltd’s annual event to recognize and reward outstanding pyrethrum farmers from Nyabihu and Rubavu Districts. The event was held in Kabatwa Sector, Myuga Cell, and was attended by Western Province Governor NTIBITURA Jean Bosco, Rubavu District Mayor MURINDWA Prosper, Horizon SOPYRWA Ltd Managing Director BIZIMUNGU Gabriel, security organs and other stakeholders, who were received by Mayor MUKANDAYISENGA Antoinette.

In their messages, the leaders commended outstanding farmers for their contribution to increasing pyrethrum production and urged them to continue investing in the crop while sharing their knowledge and experience with other farmers. Governor NTIBITURA Jean Bosco said that pyrethrum is a strategic cash crop that contributes to the country’s foreign-exchange earnings because it is used to produce products for controlling pests that affect crops and livestock, while farmers also earn income that helps improve their livelihoods.

During the event, it was revealed that Nyabihu and Rubavu Districts produce nearly 1,620 tonnes of pyrethrum annually, accounting for 75 percent of the total production processed by Horizon SOPYRWA Ltd. This production is valued at approximately Rwf2.4 billion, which goes into the hands of pyrethrum-farming households, highlighting the crop’s contribution to improving livelihoods and the economies of the two districts.

A total of 350 farmers received various awards, including 90 hoes, 350 drying sheets for pyrethrum, 40 mattresses and 10 cows. The 10 cows add to 53 cows previously given to other farmers through a livestock-rearing programme, as part of efforts to help farmers improve their livelihoods and promote livestock farming alongside pyrethrum cultivation.

Horizon SOPYRWA Ltd and its partners urged farmers to continue increasing production and improving farming practices, while local authorities and cooperatives pledged to continue supporting initiatives aimed at developing pyrethrum farming. The event provided an opportunity to recognize outstanding farmers and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in advancing the pyrethrum sector.
